A hermit is someone who keeps trying to become one with her true self. Most of the time, you human beings are talking to yourself and most of the words you throw at you are negative. When you are haunted by those words, you will never be able to be aware of the existence of your true self. A difference between you and a hermit is that when you are obsessed with your own words, she is aware of her thoughts blocking her away from her true self. Stopping her negative thoughts and listening to her true self. It's an ongoing process which needs her constant mindfulness.
