1981年の鈴鹿8耐で、驚異的な2分14秒76というコースレコードでポールポジションを獲得したガードナーですが、キックスタートに手間取ってしまい、トップグループから遥か後方から追走することになってしまう。
ガードナーのタイムに僅かに届かず、セカンドポジションからスタートしたクロスビーがアルダナとトップ争いを見せた。
しかし、ヨシムラのGS1000Rがエンジントラブルでリタイア、ガードナーもその数分後に転倒してしまう。
優勝したのはマイク・ボールドウィン/ デビッド・アルダナ組のホンダRS1000だった。
