Boasting a catalogue of superior country-rocking artists that includes Neal Casal, Wagon, the Walkabouts and Midnight Choir, any sampler from Glitterhouse Records is well worth exploring to see exactly what else they've got in the box that might be even half as good. It's hard to find a dud among the 21 cuts here; whoever compiled this little all-day-sucker knows how to sustain a mood so that once it's on the CD player, it's hard to take off again. The gritty, mysterious Seattle performer Larry Barrett is one big plus, the Jayhawks-inspired country-soul of North Carolina quartet Lou Ford is another, and any Neil Young fan will find their spirits raised by an encounter with St Louis trio Nadine. Strangely though, with the exception of two of the Walkabouts and Laura Krause of Knife In the Water, Glitterhouse is very much a "blokezone". In an era when so many women are blazing paths through songwriting, it seems a curious omission. --Johnny Black
