As with the previous volumes, Croasdell cannily assembles a cast that features familiar stalwarts such as the Tams and Ike and Tina Turner, alongside the less celebrated likes of the Blenders and Chuck Wright. the Miracles are, of course, firmly in the former category, although "If Your Mother Only Knew", a dramatic string-swirled devotional with a Latin lilt and Smokey's customary supple delivery, unfathomably failed to click chartwise. Fellow Motown label mate Carolyn Crawford also appears with the gorgeous, Berry Gordy-penned mid-tempo floater, "When Somebody's Good to You". Less known but equally sumptuous are the Superbs' seraphic ballad "Baby, Baby All the Time" and the DC Playboys' giddily joyous Van McCoy composition "You Were All I Needed". Yet again, Ady Croasdell has concocted an exquisite collection of timeless soul alchemy. --Chris King This compilation presents a potent if scattershot look at the early years of the soul music revolution. There's little in the way of a common thread; everything from the Impressions' obscure "Shorty's Gotta Go" (recorded on Bandera Records) to Richard Berry & the Pharoahs' pulsating "Have Love Will Travel" is featured. With few exceptions (i.e., the Spinners' "That's What Girls Are Made For," Ike & Tina Turner's "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and Wilson Pickett's "It's Too Late"), most of these tracks are hard to find on CD. The set includes rare Motown tracks: Jimmy Ruffin's "Don't Feel Sorry for Me" (his first recording), the Miracles' "If Your Mother Only Knew" (the flip side of "Way Over There"), and Carolyn Crawford's "When Someone Is Good to You" (her final and least-known Motown single). Also included are Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford's "I Need Your Loving," two from Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters, rarities from the Superbs, and other soulful expressions that will make this a strong addition to your collection. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
