AMAZONレビュー This is the band that inspired the launch of Miles Davis's Birth Of The Cool nine-piece at the end of 1948. Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan were two of Thornhill's writers and the band contained Lee Konitz and tuba player Bill Barber, all of whom were involved in the Davis unit. Pianist Thornhill was always concerned with textures and the pastel- shaded ensemble provides a plush background for his delicate keyboard work on several tracks. But the jazz side of the band was always kept in prominent position and of the 26 titles here Gil Evans arranged 11 and Mulligan scored two. The programme includes such bebop tunes as "Donna Lee", "Robbins' Nest" and "Anthropology", beautifully arranged by Evans for this unique ensemble. It would be wrong simply to look on the Thornhill band as a stepping stone to something else. It had a distinctive musical character of its own and in Fran Warren an exceptional and underrated singer. These are transcription recordings made for radio use and some of the pieces are longer than was then possible on commercially made discs. --Steve Voce
