五仏（五智如来）の一如来である大日如来は曼荼羅の中心に位置し、宇宙の絶対中心の存在です。

密教の世界観において中心をなす尊格。密教では、すべては大日如来から出現するとされる。

あらゆる災厄苦難を除き、将来への道が明るく開けるよう、福徳と長寿を授ける。

四面大日如来は、日本ではきわめて稀ですが、如来内証の四智を顕しているとされます.

古例としては、弘法大師の御住房であったとされる、高野山中院（今の龍光院）に秘仏として伝来しています。
