髑髏（どくろ）は英語では「 Skull 」（スカル）といわれ、結束力を促す象徴

としても取り上げられています。「どくろ」はもともと『死』の象徴ですが、

肉体は滅んでも、骨は朽ちることがないため『不滅』の象徴ともされてます。

幕末の新撰組局長・近藤勇が稽古着の背に「どくろ」を刺繍していたと伝えら

れています。これは決死の態度を意味していたといわれます。

仏教では、スカル(髑髏)は人生の無常、すなわち、物事は永遠に同じではなく、

変化するものであることを象徴し、私たちに、人生を無駄にすることなく、意味

ある生き方をする必要があることを教えてくれるものとしてとらえられています。

日本のみならず世界各地で、反戦や核兵器廃絶、反骨精神のシンボルとして

使用されてきたのが「ドクロ」です。最近はファッションアイテムとして見かける
