In March 1959, the first volume containing free style designs was published, and the second volume, a collection of designs composed mainly in geometric arrangement, is now being issued. Through the textile designs collected in the first volume, it can be perceived that the Japanese people who appreciate natural beauty have striven to develop a wide variety of designs similar to pictures for the decoration of textiles. In the second volume, we have endeavoured to show the unique and interesting development of Japanese geometric designs that have been somewhat neglected and seldom introduced abroad. Geometric designs have always been originated more or less spontaneously; they can be seen, therefore, in every country of the world, and have become universal through many centuries of cultural intercourse. The Japanese, who have an inherent love of nature and of elegance, were not completely satisfied with the indifferent style of purely geometric designs. They have so invented unique Japanese geometric textile designs by giving them softness of contour and warmth of colour, and by using them in many different ways. As a result of our work on the systematic classification of the textile designs which are presented in our first and second volumes, we have gained a keen appreciation of the ingenious character and imaginative quality of traditional Japanese textile designs. It is a glorious tradition which we have inherited, and we hope to demonstrate our worthiness of by striving to enrich it still further with new and original forms of beauty. It is our desire that this volume might serve as a truly useful reference book for better knowledge and understanding of Japanese textile designs. The first volume of this series has been more favourably received than we anticipated. The successful compilation of this volume was made possible by the friendly cooperation of a great many persons, to whom we wish to express our thanks. We wish also to record, with heartfelt regret, the loss by death of three valued members of the Center's Compilation Committee, Kunisuke Akashi, Katsutoshi Nomachi and Kanzaburo Mukai.
